EmOC Certification course FOGSI – ICOG -GOI Report

Presented in managing committee meeting and in ICOG Governing CouncilJanuary 2008 to December 2008

In the year 2008, FOGSI/ICOG established 4 new nodal centers for master trainers training for EmOC certification course. The new centers are located at MGIMS Medical College, Sevagram, Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore, PGIMS, Rohtak and SMIMMER Institute, Surat. The nodal centres are established at the request of Govt. of India & are financed by GOI. Technical assistance for setting up nodal centres is given by JHPIEGO & it is financially supported by MacArthur foundation. These additional nodal centres will help expedite the district hospital master trainers training. Currently, we have 75 district hospitals master trainers for practical training in EmOC (4 per tertiary centers). We require to train 93 more district hospital master trainers in next two years to complete our target of 8 district hospital master trainers for each tertiary centre.

FOGSI –  ICOG have already established 20 EmOC tertiary training centers in 16 states of India. This is achieved in 3 years instead of 5 years target. This year FOGSI has received request for setting up additional tertiary EmOC centers in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat (2 more centers) & Maharashtra (2 more centers). For setting up the additional training centers, we have already received the finances from respective state governments. Till December 2008, we have trained 310 MBBS Govt. doctors working in FRU’s. This is a challenge to FOGSI because less number of MBBS doctors are being posted for training by respective state govts.

In the coming year, FOGSI require to take steps to prevent trainers’ burn out by additional master trainers training in respective medical college EmOC centres.  Many MBBS doctors do not go back to functioning FRU’S as required for giving competency based certification at their place of work. A 3 days practical & theory tests for MBBS doctors who undertake training in EmOC is proposed before certifying those doctors who are not posted in functioning FRU’s.
